“Can’t someone else do it?” was the rallying slogan that won Homer Simpson the position of Springfield Sanitation Commissioner. It also somewhat applies to life today, where modern manufacturing processes have ensured that someone else is always responsible for the arduous task of making clothing and other items, leaving consumers free to ‘choose’.
While the benefit has been cheap and plentiful goods, the loss has been the glow of pride you get when you stand back from something and say ‘Look, I made that’.
